Notes from Executive Director: Happy Fall!

On the first day of fall programming, I walked through the building and instantly felt an amazing energy that made my heart sing. There were smiling faces everywhere! As I walked into our library, now called Ruth’s Reading Room, I heard one of the girls say to the staff “No, don’t stop reading now! You can’t stop now… the story was just getting better”. I knew that over the summer, 70% of our School Age Program girls improved their reading skills, and that almost all of them did not experience a summer learning loss. But to witness the girls’ thriving passion for literacy was simply inspiring.

Before going to my office, I stopped on the third floor. I walked into the Teen Center, and ‘inspired’ doesn’t even begin to describe what I felt. The room was exploding with activity. It was loud, it was fun; but yet there was a sense of seriousness in the air, as teens were fully engaged in their academics. It was comforting to see girls from last year, new girls coming with friends, and many girls who transitioned from our Middle School to our Teen Programs. They were talking to staff about peer leadership positions, mentoring programs, and community involvement. They wanted to be engaged in activities that would lead them to be Strong, Smart and Bold… and in that moment, I thought about you- all our supporters, donors and volunteers. It is because of your support that we are off to an incredible start this year.

On behalf of Girls Inc. of Lynn, thank you all!

I hope you enjoy our new website and I would like to thank everyone involved with the project. A special thank you goes out to alumnae Lani Sanethong and board members Martha Acworth and Sarah Mahoney. We are very grateful for all your help.

Happy fall.

Deb
