120 Girls Invited to Explore 12 Topics
Girls Inc. of Lynn recently hosted the Ready, Set, Go! College Readiness Conference, a college awareness event which prepares young women in grades nine, ten, and eleven for the college application process. The purpose of the Conference is to increase the number of female students from Lynn, who matriculate into an institution of higher education by increasing their preparedness for the college application process.
One hundred and twenty young women were invited to attend two, one-hour long workshops facilitated by college and university staff and working professionals. Topics included:
- How to Write a Great College Essay, Heidi Merrill, Mount Holyoke College Admissions
- Guidance Counselor Relationships/Recommendations, Maggie Jackson, IEC and Tara Mitchell, KIPP
- Common App Tips, Adrienne Ramsey, Babson College Admissions
- Choosing a College Major, Barbara Tierney and Martine Francois, SSU Center for Academic Excellence/TRIO Student Support Services
- Building Good Habits Now for Success in College, Representative, Clark University
- Building Good Habits Now for Success in College, Fillette Lovaincy and Nia Hernandez, SSU Center for Academic Excellence
- Paying Less for College by Picking the Right Place for You, Collegewise
- If the U Fits: Finding the Right College for You, Collegewise
- School’s Out: How to Make the Most of Your Summer Vacation, Collegewise

Following the workshops, the students enjoyed lunch and a student panel of female students currently enrolled in college. The panelists shared their personal stories about navigating the college application process, discussed what they wish they knew during the process and provided advice to the young women about what they can do during high school to begin planning and preparing for college.
